Changing the Locks in your New Home

The Costa del Sol is a very popular place for property buyers looking for a home in the sun, whether for a permanent residence or as a holiday home. Being such a popular tourist destination, it is also ideal for many holiday homeowners to rent out their homes for additional income during the summer months.

Whatever your reason for buying a new home, as soon as you get the keys, the first thing you should consider is changing them!

Home Security

If you have purchased new property here on the Costa del Sol, there are likely to be numerous sets of keys knocking around with neighbours, agents, contractors, even the previous owners’ friends. Those people will now have access to your new home, without you even knowing they exist.  Clearly, not so good.

Of course, not everyone is going to suddenly start turning up and letting themselves in to your house, but for your own peace of mind and security, one of the first things anyone should do when buying a home is change the locks.  There are some unscrupulous people out there and the old keys could have found their way into the hands of these people so by changing the locks, you have ruled out someone simply letting themselves in.

The other thing to consider is your home insurance. If someone did gain access via a set of keys, then your claim could be at risk if anything was stolen. It would be deemed that you did not take the necessary and adequate steps to protect your home.  If you have purchased a home on the Costa del Sol between Benalmadena and Marbella, Security of Spain are trusted by many customers already, and can arrange for your locks to be changed when you move in.

Changing the Locks and Keys is Easy!

While your rejas and security gates are intact and secure, you may want to consider replacing the locks and keys.  We are happy to help!  We can replace all your old locks with high security locks, easily and affordably.  The Costa del Sol is – at present, at least – a booming property market with many new people choosing to live here, or buy holiday let properties.  Lots of people equals lots of keys.  Most agents will have a set of keys and, with holiday rental properties, many agents will also have sets of keys.

When you move in to your new property, change the locks.  It’s just common sense.

A spare set of ’emergency’ keys given to friends or neighbours is a common idea and, assuming those people are absolutely trusted, not a bad idea.  It can, however, pose a security risk.  People do fall out, people move on, people sometimes lose keys.

We try safeguard our customers by getting duplicate keys direct from the manufacturers, by all means you can order additional or duplicate keys with us, but if for any reason something should happen to us as a company, you can go direct to the manufacturers, which means your existing cylinders or master key system does not become obsolete and you will always be able to order additional or duplicate keys.
