What Are Rejas?
If you’ve spent any time in Spain, you’ll have seen rejas on almost every street, the fixed metal grilles fitted over windows, doors and juliet balconies on homes, apartments and shops alike. They’re such a familiar part of Spanish architecture that it’s easy to walk past them without a second thought. But rejas exist for a very practical reason: they are one of the strongest, most reliable ways to protect a vulnerable opening.
Unlike a scissor gate, which is hinged and can be folded back to open up a doorway or terrace, a reja is fixed in place. It doesn’t move, it doesn’t fold, and that’s exactly the point. There’s no mechanism to force, no track to jam, and no way to leave it accidentally unlocked. For a window that doesn’t need to double as a walkway – a bathroom window, a side window, a ground-floor bedroom – a reja is often the simplest and most effective solution available.
Why Rejas Still Make Sense Today
It would be easy to assume that fixed grilles are old-fashioned compared to more modern security options, but the opposite is often true. Rejas remain one of the most effective deterrents against opportunist break-ins, precisely because they’re so visible. A burglar assessing a property from the street can see immediately that a window is protected by solid steel bars, and in the vast majority of cases, they’ll simply move on rather than attempt to force or cut through them.
That visibility works in your favour in another way too. Communities and urbanizations across the Costa del Sol are increasingly conscious of security, and a well-fitted set of rejas signals that a property has been taken seriously – which benefits not just the homeowner, but the street and community as a whole.
Rejas are also low-maintenance in a way that few other security products can match. There’s no motor, no gearbox, no moving parts to service. A well-made, powder-coated reja can sit on a window for decades with nothing more than an occasional clean.

One of the biggest misconceptions about rejas is that they’re purely functional and unattractive – plain, heavy bars bolted across a window. That’s not how we approach them. Where Rejas Work Best
Not every opening in your home needs to open and close for access – and that’s exactly where rejas earn their place. We typically recommend fixed rejas for:
- Ground and first-floor windows that don’t need to function as an emergency exit or regular access point.
- Side and rear windows, often the most vulnerable and least overlooked parts of a property.
- Bathroom and utility room windows, which are frequently left ajar for ventilation and are a common target.
- Shopfronts and commercial units, where a permanent, highly visible barrier deters both break-ins and casual vandalism outside trading hours.
- Juliet balconies and small terraces, where a decorative reja can add security without blocking light.
For openings that do need to be used regularly — patio doors, terrace access, a side door you come and go through — a scissor gate is usually the better fit, since it offers the same steel security but folds away when you need to pass through. Many of our clients choose a mix of both: fixed rejas on the windows that don’t need opening, and scissor gates on the doors that do.
