Fuengirola is probably one of the most well known resorts on the entire Costa del Sol outside of Marbella. For many years it has seen some of the highest levels of tourism within the entire coast.
Its popularity dates back to the 60’s when the Costa del Sol became a popular destination for Scandinavians and to this day, it has a high concentration of full-time Scandinavian residents.
Fuengirola also became popular with British tourists and saw a huge rise in the number of them moving or retiring to the area. Along the promenade there are lots of British style cafes, pubs and even fish and chip shops.
The town itself covers a large geographical area and is part of Mijas Costa. Unlike Marbella, there is a train station in Fuengirola linking it by rail to the centre of Malaga and the international airport.
Fuengirola is only about 20 minutes drive from Malaga Airport and with the rail link as well, it means that it is very easy to get to.
Along the frontline beach there are lots of hotels and apartments as well as cafes, bars and restaurants serving all types of Spanish and international cuisine. The beaches are some of the best to be found anywhere on the coast, and Fuengirola boasts the longest stretch of sandy beach on the Costa del Sol.
Apart from the beach and eating, Fuengirola is also steeped in history dating back to the Phoenician and Roman eras and influenced also by the Mors who occupied much of Andalucía for centuries. The famous Sohail Castle was built by Abd-ar-Rahman III and is a popular tourist attraction overlooking the Mediterranean. These days the grounds are used for summer concerts and picnics.
When it comes to shopping you really are spoilt for choice in Fuengirola with many small boutiques and the Dunnes Store in the centre of town. On the other side of the main road there is a large shopping centre called the Miramar where you will find all the usual high street shops and then further along you can find another Dunnes Store and even an Iceland supermarket, popular with expats living or holidaying in the area.
